Description Change this

The only known work of Szeged-born and –based architect Marianne Várnay to still exist. Várnay was the first woman to graduate as an architect in Hungary in 1924 and to be accepted as a member of the Association of Hungarian Engineers and Architects (Magyar Mérnök- és Építész Egylet, MMÉE) in 1925.

In 1935 she won the first prize on the competition for the local headquarters of the State Social Security Institute (Országos Társadalombiztosítási Intézet, OTI) in Szeged, divided with Budapest-based architect Lajos Gyenes. According to news sources, the institute’s preferred and privileged architect Raul Kopeczky was also involved in the process. Most sources however coin Várnay as the designer of the 4-storey building on the Tisza Lajos avenue of Szeged. The art deco façade is dominated by an elegant corner tower, decorated with sculptures by another successful female artist of the time, Éva Lőte. The construction works were finished in 1937.

Currently, the building houses a local clinic.
